Abstract: |
Melville 's unique and enduring novel Moby-Dick is a tremendous chronicle of a whaling voyage, reflecting the realities of the social economic life of the United States in the 19th century. In the framework of the exciting whaling and revenge story of Pequod whaling ship headed by Captain Ahab, the story unfolds a panoramic social scroll of the colorful life on the sea and the development of the whaling industry. Viewed from the perspective of energy narration, the whaling ship, as one of the major and direct sources of national wealth of 19th century America, is virtually a floating oil factory which projects, pursues, processes, refines and markets its oil products on a global scale, since the whale oil had to be extracted and stored aboard. The whale-pursuing voyage covers the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Ocean. Thus,Melville actually unfolds a story of America 's early monopoly and global expansion of the energy industry. |
