Abstract:
From the perspective of cross-linguistic influences on learners processing, the current study applied self-paced reading experiment and grammatical acceptability judgement test, compared the explicit and implicit knowledge of Chinese learners of English, and explored how the pivotal sentences in Chinese influences Chinese ESL learners processing of English nonfinite verbs as object complement. Online experiment showed that the morpho-syntactic features in L1 influenced the second language processing, especially for Chinese ESL learners of lower-intermediate L2 proficiency. With the development of L2 proficiency, higher-intermediate learners processed natives-like. Offline test showed that the explicit knowledge, namely metalinguistic knowledge was not influenced by L1. In general, the online and offline tests indicate that influenced by pivotal sentences in Chinese L1, Chinese ESL learners showed asymmetry in implicit knowledge and explicit knowledge in processing nonfinite verbs as object complement in English L2.
