Abstract:
Mind Travel" and "Picturesque" are two important aesthetic categories in Chinese and Western aesthetics respectively. The common view in these categories is appreciating nature through paintings of nature. However, there are notable differences between them:in landscape paintings of "Mind Travel", importance is attached to freehand brushwork, while in landscape paintings of "Picturesque" importance is attached to realism. Mind Travel theory stresses that the landscape approaches Tao through the beauty of its shape, so nature takes a more important status than painting. Picturesque theory pursues the formal beauty, and landscape painting is the standard of natural appreciation, so painting takes a more important status than nature. Mind Travel theory emphasizes the non-physical experience of nature, in which appreciators are confined to one room while the mind tours in all things. However, Picturesque theory stresses the physical experience of nature and tourist takes a physical tour of nature with curiosity and visual acquisitiveness. "Mind Travel" has the functions of pleasing spirits and treatment of diseases, while "Picturesque" provides psychological protection to people 's aesthetic march to nature. The comparison of "Mind Travel" and "Picturesque" can not only reflects the differences in Chinese and Western natural aesthetics, but also reflects the different attitudes to nature in China and the West.
