Abstract:
Resource-based cities in China, which have long relied on traditional resource consumption and spatially expansive development models, face multiple challenges such as monolithic industrial structures and worsening environmental pollution. Therefore enhancing energy efficiency is a critical measure for these cities to achieve their 'dual carbon ' goals. As an emerging productive force, digital technology is becoming the core driver for improving energy efficiency in resource-based cities. Taking 113 resource-based cities in China over the period of 2011 to 2022 as the research subjects, the study measures their energy efficiency from a dynamic perspective, constructs a regression model, and explores the spatial spillover mechanism through which the development of digital technology development enhances energy efficiency in China 's resource-based cities. The findings reveal that:during the study period, energy efficiency in China 's resource-based cities fluctuates slightly, showing an overall gradual decline with significant regional disparities; digital technology development significantly improves energy efficiency within regions, though substantial regional heterogeneity persists, and it exerts a significant positive spatial spillover effect on energy efficiency; further analysis indicates that digital technology development exerts relatively pronounced direct effects on energy efficiency in resource-based cities of Northeast and Western regions, while their spatial spillover effects are notably pronounced in resource-based cities of Northeast and Eastern regions.
