Translation as "Saying" or "Doing" ——Conceptual Changes in Western Translation Theories

Abstract:
In this paper, a historical survey is made of Western translation theories centering upon the conceptual changes of translation. With the turn from the source oriented model, which takes translation as a form of "saying", to the target-oriented model, which takes translation as a form of "doing", Western translation theory has undergone a process from utopia to reality. The turn indicates not only a revaluation of translation, but also a shift from "what" question to "why" question. However, the current model cannot shed light on what translation means as a human practice on a comprehensive basis. The future model is suggested to proceed from the notion of translation as a human practice, a way of life, and to focus on the relationship between translation and human existence.
